Final Fantasy XV sales top 10 million worldwide

This makes XV one of the best-selling Final Fantasy games to date.

It's been over five years since Final Fantasy XV was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2016. As the next installment in the long-running series draws closer, Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XV has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. This includes total worldwide sales for Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition and units for all platforms.

The Tweet above reads: “Final Fantasy XV has sold 10 million units worldwide! Thank you all for your support and thank you for supporting FFXV moving forward!”

In terms of Final Fantasy sales, that puts XV up high. The original Final Fantasy VII sold around 13 million units, while Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XIV also sold around 10 million copies.

Set in the fictional world of Eos, Final Fantasy XV tells the story of Noctis Lucis Caelum, heir to the Lucian throne. Besides Insomnia, the capital of Lucis, the world is dominated by the Empire of Niflheim, which seeks to control the magic crystal protected by the Lucian royal family. Just before the peace negotiations begin, Niflheim attacks the capital and steals the beloved crystal. The prince and his three closest friends must venture across the land to retrieve the crystal and defeat Niflheim.

The next main title in the franchise, Final Fantasy XVI, does not yet have a release date. The game's first trailer dropped during the PlayStation 5 reveal in 2020, with news slowly arriving over the next two years. In January, the game's producer Naoki Yoshida promised that more XVI news would arrive in the spring of 2022 after the game's development was pushed back nearly six months due to the pandemic. Earlier this month, Yoshida revealed that a trailer for Final Fantasy XVI has been completed and will be unveiled soon.

“Final Fantasy XVI aims to integrate the story and gameplay experience into a single-player game. Unlike online play, which features multiple players simultaneously, Final Fantasy XVI focuses on the individual,” Yoshida said in a recent interview. “It makes the story more immersive. It's a very dense story.
