Black Desert Online Remastered guide explanation of the system of deaths, karma and penalties

While death is fairly rare when you start out as a character in Black Desert Online Remastered, it becomes much less so once you reach level 50 and things really start to kick off, especially when the Savage Player Encounter system is activated ( PvP) outside of safe areas. If you have the misfortune to come across a veteran or a crazed and deceitful player who takes you as a traitor, you have a good chance of dying without understanding what has just happened to you while you were focused on your own objectives... Dying in Black Desert Online Remastered has certain risks that serve as penalties.

If you fall on the battlefield in front of the monsters in the environment or against another player, there are a series of potential risks that arise depending on the circumstances in which the death occurred. To help you understand how the death system works, what your character's karma gauge means and what penalties are linked to the different deaths, we have prepared this guide for you.

What are the risks when his character dies in Black Desert Online Remastered?

Death in Black Desert Online Remastered falls into different categories with different levels of punishment depending on the situation in which it happened.

Die to an environment monster (PvE) – Deaths due to the environment (PvE) lead to a loss of experience points with the risk of seeing one of his magic crystals break.

Die to another player at level 50 (PvP) – Deaths against other players do not lead to loss of experience points and you have no risk of seeing one of your magic crystals break, UNLESS you have a negative karma gauge.

Dying with negative karma – If you have chained bad actions in the game, in particular by killing other players who had clearly indicated that they did not want to fight, then you will end up obtaining the status of “outlaw” which includes real penalties which will serve you of punishment. If you die with negative karma, you will lose experience points and your magic crystals will be systematically broken whether you failed against another player OR against a monster in the environment. You will also suffer a loss of your equipment's upgrade level when dying against monsters, and will respawn in a random area in the region where you died.

What are the respawn options on death in Black Desert Online Remastered?

If you die during a fight in BDO, you have several options for respawning. Be careful, if you don't choose a respawn location one minute after death, the game will automatically resurrect you in a random area.

  1. Instant Resurrection – If you have the Tear of Elion, you have the possibility to choose to reappear at the place where you died, UNLESS it is an occupied and besieged zone and if the death occurred under the water. Using the "Elion's Tear" also instantly restores the combat experience points you just lost.
  2. Resurrect at nearest node – You have the possibility to select the geopoint closest to your death point which you have obviously previously activated on the world map. However, remember that a character with a negative karma value will be resurrected in a random location which also includes nodes you haven't activated yet... If there is no node nearby or you have not activated one while your karma has a positive value, this option cannot be selected, keep it in mind.
  3. Resurrect in the nearest town – The last option allows you to respawn in the city closest to your point of death. If no city has been discovered on the territory you were exploring, then the game will choose for you the city closest to your base.

How karma works and what are the consequences:

So that's the most important part of this guide that you REALLY should check out if you've just hit level 50 in Black Desert Online Remastered. Your adventure at this time is punctuated by new rules, in particular by the activation of wild combat between players (PvP) outside of safe zones. From there, anyone in the world of BDO can decide to attack you, even if you have disabled this feature!

Your character's karma cannot exceed 300 points and decreases if you do bad deeds like stealing, killing other adventurers who have disabled options in PvP, or having fun killing animals like horses. So, for example, if you attack a player who does not retaliate and kill them your karma will decrease by 000 points which means that if you start again you will be considered an outlaw with the big ones. penalties that will go with it. Similarly, you will no longer be quiet, because even in "safe" areas you will have a target on your head. You may be attacked by non-player guards on the outskirts and within the enclosure of the various cities and therefore receive death penalties.

★ Note – when roaming the desert region (Valencia) of BDO with negative karma, you no longer lose your magic crystals or experience points after being defeated by other players, as well as the level of improvement of your equipment no longer drops when dying against monsters in the environment.

→ Some tips to know about Karma:

  1. If the PvP options are active (can be activated and deactivated via Alt+C on PC), if you are attacked first by another player and you retaliate, or even win the fight, your karma gauge will not be affected. This is self defense.
  2. By attacking another player, your karma value drops by 10 points and an additional 000 if you kill the character of the other player you are attacking. And this is valid even if the player in front accepts PvP fights.
  3. You gradually regain karma points by simply killing the monsters in the environment.
